“37Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment.39And the second is like it:
‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’… Matthew 22:37-38
PART 1 - KNOWING YOUR DIVINE PURPOSE
1st Purpose - Live our life for Jesus who made us. Our purpose in life revolves around the 2 commandments Jesus left His disciples then and now - Matthew 22:37. Our initial and most important purpose in life is to LOVE GOD and live for Him. Loving and living for Him means worshiping Him, living in obedience to His command and serving Him and Him only. By doing this, we find the deeper meaning and purpose in life. We were not created only to live life on earth and die. The Word of God says, we were created for His glory. And loving Him and living for Him is giving God all the glory He deserve and only He deserve.
2nd Purpose - Love others as we love our selves - Matthew 22:38.
Loving others and giving ourselves for one another gives us inner peace, joy and
satisfaction in being able to help others and be a blessing to them.
"13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do what I command you." - John 15: 13-14
As we love others, we are even more encourage to outdo honoring one another, specially those in the faith - our spiritual brothers and sisters.
“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another.”
- Romans 12: 9-10
“9 Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest, if we do
not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and
especially to the family of faith.” - Galatians 6:9-10
3rd Purpose - Our specific purpose in serving Jesus - OUR CALLING! Only when we finally live our the purpose of the Lord in our life, living our destiny and our calling will we really feel the real meaning of success in life. The contentment, the joy and the satisfaction in life that can be found only in Jesus as we live for His glory.
“But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and
that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth” (Exodus 9:16)
Our Father God wants to display His power and might in and through our life. His desire is to
show people who His children really are and how a child of God should live. In fact, as followers of Jesus - we were told by His Word that our life as His disciples will be accompanied by His powers. But this will be achieved only as we continually surrender our heart, our life to Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to live, move in and through our life. To fulfill this 3rd purpose, we can summarize this calling in this verse: Matthew 4:19b-20 says,
“’Follow Me (Jesus) and I will make you fishers of men.’ Immediately they (Simon and Andrew) left their nets and followed Him.”
God has a plan for your life and mine. Our purpose as His disciples is to make disciples
for Him and so many will be saved.
NOTE: When we live outside the will of God for our life, at first we may feel that success as
the world acknowledges it, but eventually, we come to a point of feeling incomplete, lost and
living a life that is pointless and meaningless. Dr. Miles Monroe says: (He is an Bahamian Evangelist, author of “In Pursuit of Purpose and Understanding Your Potential.. to name a few)
“Accomplishments without a sense of purpose are meaningless. Life without an
understanding of life’s purpose leads to disillusionment and emptiness.”
This is why as we give our life to Jesus, He leads us to the right path. And even if we
sometimes divert to a different route (through disobedience), the Holy Spirit will convict us
and lead us back to the right direction.
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
- Proverbs 19:21
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who
have been called according to His purpose. - Romans 8:28
“He has saved us and called us to a holy life - not because of anything we have done
but because of His own purpose and grace.” - 2 Timothy 1:9
IF we continue to walk in holiness, we can be sure to not lose track of God’s will for our life.
PART 2 - BEING AWARE OF HOW WE ARE TO PROTECT OURSELVES AS WE LIVE ON
PURPOSE
Living a Holy Life will never go unnoticed - even by the enemy! Satan will do His best to do the following to stop you - why? BECAUSE THERE IS A TREMENDOUS POWER IN PURPOSE!
One person in the right place, in the right time led the by Holy Spirit, doing the right thing
will be very difficult to stop. Note that purpose has MOMENTUM! That is why the enemy has already developed all kinds of distraction, tactics to keep us from being focused on our God given purpose!
1 - He will stop you from discovering that specific, unique purpose (call it your destiny) - by keeping you away from God and His Presence. By stopping you from reading His Word, from praying and talking to God and by not wanting to even be in the presence of the Holy Spirit.
“There are many “successful” people in life who never fulfill their purpose. Making
money and being outwardly successful doesn’t mean that we are living according to our
purpose.” - Steve Uppal - Author of One Life
2 - He will make you forget your calling/purpose - by keeping you focused on your success
be it in your studies as a student maybe, or in your career. Some are so focused on their family or personal problems and issues in life.
3 - He will make you doubt your purpose - he will give you so many challenges to stop you until you finally doubt and think that maybe you were wrong in hearing the voice of God for your
calling.
4 - He will try to stop you from fulfilling your purpose - by making you feel inferior, inadequate
- thus you never want to move a step in faith and just be contented in your own small world
(comfort zone). Some people do discover their purpose in life, but because of fear of facing
challenges or feeling of inferiority, they never get to live God’s purpose for their life.
PICTURE THE LIFE OF DAVID - as a young shepherd to a great king of Israel. His success in killing Goliath was because He was never afraid knowing that God is always with him. Being secured in the fact that God Himself will fight for him.
Another example: The greatest example of a person who lived to fulfill His purpose is JESUS!
JESUS - lived His destiny! See Jesus on earth:
He wasn’t rich - just a simple carpenter
He never went to college
He doesn’t have a degree
Never traveled more than 100 miles away from where He lived
BUT JESUS CHANGED THE WORLD OF THOSE WHO BELIEVED IN HIM! He changed
His disciples who eventually turned the world around back to Him! The impact of His life
on His disciples made an impact to all of us, even today and even for the years and
generations to come!
Here are 5 simple ways to follow the purpose and plan of Jesus in our life:
1. Trust God’s judgement - “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
2. Know the skills, abilities and gifts God has given you. Your purpose is around those
skills and gifts and abilities God gave you so you may accomplish His will. 3. Be in prayer - “And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask
anything according to His will he hears us. And if we know that He hears us in
whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of Him.” (1
John 5:14-15)
4. Be INTENTIONAL & STAY COMMITTED to your calling - “If I speak in the tongues
of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging
cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all
knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am
nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned but have
not love I gain nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)
5. Answer when God calls - live in obedience! Be inspired by this verse in Matthew
25:35-40
“’For I (Jesus) was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick
and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will
answer Him saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and
give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked
and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the
King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my
brothers, you did it to me.’”
It is God’s desire that you and I live our lives for His glory - and that is by living our God given
purpose. So let’s live our purpose and fulfill the will of God! Let’s live for Jesus!
